On December 10, 2012, the life of Robert Darnell Harris, a 35-year-old Black male from Detroit, Michigan, came to a violent end on the city's east side. Known to his friends and family by the nickname "Smokey," Harris was a graduate of Kettering High School and had pursued further studies at the Superior Medical Education College. He was known for his work as a security guard at prominent local venues such as Hart Plaza and Cobo Hall.
Beyond his professional life, those close to him remembered him as a man with creative and athletic passions, including a love for cooking, writing poetry, and boxing.
The fatal incident occurred in the early morning hours of that Monday, approximately around 1:00 a.m. Harris was in the vicinity of Hayes and Hazelridge streets, near the intersection of Kelly and Seymour Streets. Residents in the area reported hearing a chilling disturbance prior to the violence; witnesses described hearing a man, later identified as Harris, audibly pleading for his life. These pleas were abruptly silenced by the sound of gunfire. When authorities arrived at the scene, they found Harris had been gunned down, ending the confrontation with lethal force.
Despite the visceral accounts of the final moments, the investigation into Harris's death struggled to produce immediate leads. Years after the shooting, detectives reported having very little information regarding the identity of the perpetrator. No description of a suspect was ever released to the public, and the case grew cold with no reported arrests, charges, or convictions connected to the murder. Four years after the crime, Crime Stoppers of Michigan continued to solicit tips from the community, offering a cash reward for information that could lead to the arrest of the person responsible for killing Harris, yet the case remained unsolved in public records.
