On October 12, 2021, 39-year-old Yarsellay Sammie Sr., a male of African American ethnicity, was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting on Montgomery Road near Route 22 and I-71 in Evanston, Cincinnati, OH. He was walking in a crosswalk when the driver of a four-door sedan sprayed multiple bullets at him. Despite being taken to UC Medical Center by a civilian, he was later pronounced dead.
The investigation into Yarsellay Sammie Sr.'s death led to the arrest of a 16-year-old suspect,
Michael Madaris, who was already in custody for other charges, including the murder of Avante Baker Beatty in September 2021. On April 14, 2022, Cincinnati police charged Michael Madaris with the murders of Yarsellay Sammie Sr., Javier Randolph, and Avante Baker Beatty. The charges against the teenager included murder, felonious assault, abduction, burglary, tampering with evidence, carrying a concealed weapon, and obstructing official business. The judge set his bond at $8.2 million.
