William Caslin, Sr., a 64-year-old African American man from Columbus, OH, tragically died on May 5, 2022. He was shot while sitting inside his vehicle in a parking lot at an apartment complex in the 1800 block of Oakland Park Avenue. Medics pronounced him dead at 6:19 a.m. that morning. The incident occurred during an attempted drug deal, where Caslin had gone to purchase cocaine.
John Rash, a 23-year-old man, was charged with reckless homicide and possession of drugs in connection to
Caslin's death. According to court records, Rash, also known as "Joe Joe," answered the door with a gun in his hands and took the money from Caslin. Rash then retreated to the kitchen, where a gunshot was heard. Rash claimed the gun had gone off accidentally, but Caslin was shot through the cabinet in the adjacent apartment. Rash and another individual fled the scene in a vehicle.
Caslin's death was the 42nd homicide in Columbus that year. Rash was held at the Franklin County Jail and faced a $250,000 bond. The case remains under investigation by the Columbus Police Department, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to submit a tip.
Caslin was a beloved husband, father, and friend who was known for his sense of humor and his dedication to his family and community. He served in the U.S. Army and worked as a roofer for many years. His passing left a significant void in the lives of those who knew and loved him.
