Willie Grimes, a 20-year-old African American male, was killed on May 20, 1969, during the 1969 Greensboro uprising. The uprising was a series of protests and violent clashes between student protesters, police, and the National Guard at James B. Dudley High School and North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University . Grimes, a sophomore honors student at A&T, was caught in the crossfire and became the only casualty of the uprising.
