On the Fourth of July in 2013, what should have been a festive day on the east side of Detroit turned into a scene of violence and loss. That evening, Demetrius Jackson Jr., a young man just two days shy of his 26th birthday, was enjoying a game of dice with a group of people at a home in the 1100 block of Stringham Court. The friendly gathering was abruptly shattered when an unknown Black male approached the group and opened fire, striking Demetrius.
The sudden eruption of gunfire sent
shockwaves through the neighborhood. In the ensuing chaos, the unidentified assailant made a quick escape, fleeing the scene in a dark-colored vehicle before law enforcement could arrive. Demetrius Jackson Jr., a recent high school graduate and a father to two young sons, was left fatally wounded. His life, full of promise and love for his family, was tragically cut short in a senseless act of violence.
In the years that have followed, the pain of Demetrius's unsolved murder has deeply affected his family. They have made public pleas for any information that could lead to the capture of the person responsible for his death. In a press conference held in June of 2015, his mother and other relatives spoke of their enduring grief and their desperate need for closure, describing sleepless nights haunted by the knowledge that his killer remains free.
Despite the passage of time, the case of Demetrius Jackson Jr.'s murder remains an open investigation. Crime Stoppers of Michigan has offered a cash reward for any information that leads to an arrest. The suspect has only been described as a Black male, and no arrests have been made in connection with the shooting. The motive for the attack is still unclear, leaving a grieving family and community searching for answers and justice for a life taken too soon.
