The circumstances surrounding Melissa's death were deeply distressing. On May 6, 2014, Morrisville police discovered the bodies of Melissa and her husband, Jonathan Preston, in their home on Weaver Forest Way. The investigation revealed that Jonathan Preston, aged 46, had shot and killed Melissa before turning the gun on himself. The police investigation into the murder-suicide indicated that the couple had been experiencing problems, although no argument was reported at the time of the incident.
