In the late hours of a Saturday in November 2020, a beloved figure in the Nashville community, Rasheed Walker, a 31-year-old African American male, was fatally shot in an act of violence that sent shockwaves through the city. The incident occurred on November 14, 2020, outside his brother's barbershop in North Nashville, Tennessee. Walker was a cherished teacher's aide at Cora Howe Exceptional School and a dedicated youth advocate who had founded both the Nashville Pro-Am Basketball League and
the nonprofit organization HustleStrong.
The motive behind the tragic event was determined to be robbery. The investigation into Walker's death led authorities to Robert Rasean Smith, a 29-year-old man with a prior criminal history that included armed robbery and burglary. Security camera footage was instrumental in identifying Smith as the shooter, leading to his arrest on December 5, 2020. Walker's younger brother, Benny Walker, was a witness to the horrific event and attempted to intervene by returning fire as Smith fled the scene.
Initially facing a charge of first-degree murder, Robert Rasean Smith later entered into a plea agreement. He pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree murder.
