Bobby Ray Pegg, a 45-year-old white male from Barnardsville, NC, was found dead on March 23, 2017. His niece discovered his body in his home, and it was later determined that he had died from multiple gunshot wounds. The incident was initially not ruled a homicide until evidence of foul play emerged. Pegg was a father of three children and was known for his giving nature and sense of humor.
Timothy Robert Gallion, a 51-year-old white male from Barnardsville, was found guilty of
first-degree murder in the death of Bobby Ray Pegg. Gallion was also convicted of possession of a firearm by a felon and driving while impaired. He was acquitted of second-degree arson. Gallion was on parole at the time of the murder and was wearing a GPS monitoring device, which placed him near Pegg's home on the day before the body was discovered. When authorities stopped Gallion on the day Pegg's body was found, he was in possession of multiple firearms and was intoxicated. Blood smears were found on Gallion's hands and inside his vehicle.
The investigation revealed that a 9mm Cobray pistol with an extended magazine, found in Gallion's possession, was used to kill Pegg. Gallion was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case left the Barnardsville community in shock and grief, but the guilty verdict provided some measure of closure for Pegg's family.
