Taylor Sorera Smith, a 14-year-old girl from Mount Holly, North Carolina, was tragically shot to death on April 3, 2017. The incident occurred around 3 p.m. in River Street Park, located on N. River Street off of E. Charlotte Avenue. Taylor was found by officers on the ground with gunshot wounds and was later pronounced dead at the hospital. The park, typically filled with children, became the scene of a devastating crime that shocked the local community.
The investigation revealed that Taylor Sorera Smith, a young African American girl, knew her assailant. The suspect, 18-year-old Darvon Fletcher, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. Fletcher and Smith had driven to the park together from Charlotte, indicating that they were acquainted. The motive behind the shooting remains unclear, but it was evident that the two had some form of relationship.
Further developments in the case led to the arrest of a second teenager, 17-year-old Eric Deon Combs. Combs turned himself in to the Montgomery County, Ohio Sheriff’s Office and was later extradited to North Carolina. He was also charged with first-degree murder in connection with Taylor's death. The Gaston County District Attorney’s office scheduled Combs’ first court appearance following his extradition.

Family members expressed their grief and disbelief, with one relative describing Taylor as "a flower that was not fully bloomed." The case drew significant attention, and the Mount Holly Police Department, along with Crime Stoppers of Gaston County, urged anyone with further information to come forward.
