On December 11, 2014, the life of a prominent community member and father of seven came to a tragic end in Detroit, Michigan. Elliott Evans, a 51-year-old Black businessman, was found shot to death inside his own establishment, a retail store and "swap shop" known as Exceeding Faiths, located on Schaefer Highway near Bassett Street. Known for his entrepreneurial spirit, Evans owned multiple properties throughout the city and was actively involved in rehabbing and flipping houses, a venture that
occupied his final hours.
The circumstances surrounding the homicide remain shrouded in mystery. Just prior to his death, Evans had hosted a business meeting at his shop with a group of men who assisted him with his property renovations. According to reports, the meeting concluded and the men departed, leaving Evans alone in the store. Within a short window of approximately 90 minutes following their departure, an unknown assailant entered the business and fatally shot him. The only item reported missing from the scene was the victim's cell phone, leaving investigators with few leads regarding a motive beyond the singular act of violence.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, the Evans family faced a harrowing experience at the crime scene. Relatives reported arriving at the business to find that law enforcement had already cleared the area, yet the shop had been left unsecured. In a deeply traumatic turn of events, the family was left to clean up the physical remnants of the tragedy themselves, discovering blood and tissue still present inside the store. This lack of closure and the condition of the scene added a layer of profound distress to their grieving process.
Despite the passage of time, justice has remained elusive for the Evans family. As of the last major public appeals for information, no suspects have been named, and no arrests have been made in connection with the case. Detectives have not publicly identified the individuals present at the meeting as suspects, and the investigation stalled, turning into a cold case. Years later, family members continued to gather at his resting place in Trinity Cemetery to hold vigils, pleading for anyone with knowledge of the crime to come forward and help solve the mystery of who killed the beloved father and businessman.
