Lucero Sosa Capote, a 29-year-old Hispanic woman, tragically lost her life on July 12, 2019, in Monroe, North Carolina. Lucero was born in Guerrero, Mexico, and moved to the United States at the age of six. She was a loving wife, mother, daughter, and sister, known for her compassion and strong faith. Lucero was a devoted mother to her five children and was deeply loved by her family and friends.
On the morning of July 12, 2019, Lucero Sosa Capote was killed during a break-in at her home
on Tower Court in Monroe. The incident occurred around 4:40 a.m. when two masked men broke into her home. Lucero was shot and killed while trying to protect her children. Two of her children were injured during the home invasion. The suspects, identified as 25-year-old Byron Watkins and 19-year-old Antwan David Sturdivant, were arrested and charged with first-degree murder, first-degree burglary, robbery with a dangerous weapon, and other related charges. Watkins was considered armed and extremely dangerous and was arrested in Lexington County, South Carolina, following a standoff with officers. Sturdivant turned himself in to the Monroe police.
A third suspect, 30-year-old Kristen Chambers, was also arrested in connection with Lucero's death. Chambers was charged with conspiracy to commit second-degree burglary and accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. She turned herself in to the Union County Jail and was placed under a $500,000 bond. The arrests of Watkins, Sturdivant, and Chambers brought some relief to Lucero's family, who were still grieving and trying to move forward one day at a time. Lucero's sister, Miriam Capote, expressed hope that God would have mercy on the suspects, despite the pain they caused by taking the life of a mother of five children.
