Spears walked into a hospital with a gunshot wound just before midnight on October 27, 2022. Despite undergoing surgery, he succumbed to his injuries five days later.

On March 14, 2023, Karime Williams, a 39-year-old male, was arrested and charged with murder in connection to Spears' death. Williams was already in custody on federal weapons charges related to the murder investigation.
