Town Marshal Walter G. Nicholas, aged 29, was shot and killed on November 20, 1909, in Delhi, Louisiana. He was attempting to arrest a man for disorderly conduct in a restaurant along the railroad tracks in the central part of town. During the altercation, the suspect shot Marshal Nicholas. As the suspect was in a dying condition, angry citizens seized and hanged him.
