On December 14, 2013, Clifton Chatman, a 16-year-old from San Francisco, was killed in what was described as a botched robbery attempt. The incident occurred near Alemany Boulevard in the Bernal Heights neighborhood. Chatman, along with a group of accomplices, attempted to rob a man, demanding his cell phone and other belongings. The victim complied, but during the confrontation, one of the robbers fired a gun.
The bullet, however, ricocheted off the victim's face and tragically struck Chatman, resulting in his death.
The robbery victim was seriously wounded but survived the incident, and the other suspects fled the scene. Law enforcement quickly launched an investigation, eventually arresting a 16-year-old accomplice of Chatman on charges of murder and attempted robbery. Due to the juvenile status of the involved individuals, authorities did not release the name of the accomplice. The peculiar nature of the incident, where Chatman was inadvertently shot by his own accomplice, shocked the local community.
The case raised discussions about youth violence, crime, and safety in San Francisco’s neighborhoods, particularly those affected by socioeconomic struggles. While some saw the event as part of a larger issue concerning gang-related activities in the area, others expressed sympathy for Chatman’s family, emphasizing the tragedy of a young life lost during a crime.
