Donald Kuykendall, a 64-year-old Black man, was still out on Detroit’s east side in the thin, quiet hours before dawn on April 5, 2017, when something went terribly wrong near the intersection of Gratiot Avenue and Seneca Street. In the darkness around 3:50 a.m., motorists spotted a man lying in the roadway and stopped, calling for help and pulling him out of traffic before emergency crews arrived.
