Devin Dewayne Myers, a 17-year-old male, was a promising star basketball player at Shreveport's Huntington High School with aspirations of playing in the NBA. Tragically, his life was cut short on March 3, 2022, just a day after his seventeenth birthday, when he was fatally shot in the Queensborough neighborhood of Shreveport, Louisiana. Myers had gone to a friend's house to get a phone charger when he encountered Shamichael Antonio Pearson.
The two had a previous argument, and upon
seeing Myers, Pearson reportedly said, 'Didn't I tell you that I was going to get you?'. He then proceeded to shoot Myers in the back multiple times as he tried to flee. Eyewitness testimony revealed the harrowing detail that Pearson stood over Myers' body and shot him at least two more times. In total, Myers was shot as many as 13 times. The community was left in mourning for the young athlete who was remembered as a great young man with a bright future.
The investigation into Devin's murder led police to Shamichael Antonio Pearson, who was 19 at the time of his conviction. A handgun discovered in a freezer at Pearson's residence was determined to be the murder weapon through ballistics testing, and DNA evidence linked the firearm to Pearson. In March 2023, a Caddo Parish jury deliberated for less than an hour before finding Pearson guilty of second-degree murder.
Following his conviction, Shamichael Antonio Pearson was sentenced to a mandatory life sentence in prison without the possibility of parole. In the wake of his death, Devin Myers' legacy continues to be honored. His family works to keep his memory alive, and a scholarship in his name, the “Devin Myers Opportunity Scholarship,” was established to be awarded to a graduate of Huntington High School to help them pursue their educational and career goals.
