On June 18, 1983, 21-year-old Kevin Paule and his fiancée, 25-year-old Sharon Winker, both residents of Mascoutah, Illinois, decided to spend their day fishing along the west bank of Silver Creek, approximately half a mile west of Mascoutah. This serene location was a favored spot for the couple, who were planning to marry the following year. Unbeknownst to them, this outing would tragically be their last.
As they settled into their fishing routine, Charles Walker, a 43-year-old man from Fayetteville, Illinois, approached them. After a brief conversation, Walker, driven by a desire for money to purchase alcohol, brandished a .25-caliber pistol and demanded Paule's wallet, which contained $40. He then forced the couple into a wooded area nearby, where he used tape from his car to bind their hands behind their backs and secure them to trees. When Paule mentioned that he recognized Walker and knew his name, Walker decided to eliminate any potential witnesses. He shot Kevin Paule once in the right temple and Sharon Winker once behind the left ear, resulting in their immediate deaths.
The following morning, concerned by her daughter's absence, Sharon Winker's mother went to the fishing spot and discovered Paule's body. She immediately alerted authorities, who then found Winker's body approximately 20 feet away. Both victims were fully clothed, and there was no evidence of sexual assault or physical beating. The crime scene revealed that some of the couple's fishing equipment was missing, but it was unclear if any money had been taken.
In the ensuing investigation, law enforcement identified Charles Walker as the primary suspect. He was apprehended on July 15, 1983, in Walden, Colorado, after authorities received information about his possible whereabouts. Upon his return to St. Clair County, Walker waived his rights and confessed to the murders and an armed robbery committed the same night at a nearby tavern. He pleaded guilty to two counts of murder and one count of armed robbery. A jury subsequently sentenced him to death.
