On October 4, 1986, Patrolman Jay F. Brunkella, aged 39, tragically died from injuries sustained during a narcotics arrest near the Stephen F. Gale Elementary School in Chicago. Brunkella, an 18-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department, was part of the 24th District – Rogers Park Tactical Unit. The incident occurred on September 22, 1986, when Brunkella and his partner, Patrolman Fred Hattenberger, were working undercover to address complaints of drug sales at the school.
