Do you know who murdered Eden?
In the winter of 2016, a 30-year-old African-American man named Eden Jacquet was fatally shot inside a home on Fenwood Road in Boston's Mission Hill neighborhood. On the evening of January 13th, police responded to a call for an "unknown medical situation" around 7:40 p.m. Upon arrival at 55 Fenwood Rd., officers discovered Jacquet suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Friends of Jacquet, a father to a young daughter, set up a GoFundMe page to help his family with expenses.
For more than two years, the case remained without an arrest. However, the Boston Police Department's Homicide and Fugitive Units continued their investigation. Their efforts eventually led them to identify 24-year-old Kevin Fernandes as the primary suspect. In August 2018, Fernandes was located and arrested in Mattapan. He was subsequently charged with murder and unlawful possession of a firearm in connection with Jacquet's death.
The break in the case came through a combination of digital forensics and ballistic evidence. Investigators were eventually able to access Fernandes' text messages from around the time of the murder. One message reportedly indicated that he had arrived at Jacquet's apartment just moments before the fatal shooting. Furthermore, a shell casing recovered from the scene of Jacquet's murder was ballistically matched to casings found at another shooting that occurred ten days later, a shooting where Fernandes was present. According to the Suffolk County District Attorney's Office, Fernandes had visited Jacquet's home earlier on the day of the murder, left, and then returned that evening when a commotion was heard, and Jacquet was allegedly shot in the chest.
