On the evening of December 28, Yuri was walking near Central and Harrison in the South Austin neighborhood when he was approached by a man who fired multiple shots, hitting him in the leg.
Despite being rushed to Mount Sinai Hospital, Yuri succumbed to his injuries early the next morning.
The investigation into Yuri Hardy's death revealed that he was shot while walking south in the 100 block of North Central Avenue. The Cook County medical examiner's office ruled his death a homicide. The case remained unsolved for several months, with no immediate suspects or arrests. However, in June 2017, Tyshaun Powell, a 20-year-old male, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with Yuri's death. Powell was taken into custody by the Gang Investigations Unit and was held without bond at Cook County Jail.
