Quentin Tillison, a 37-year-old African American male from Maywood, Illinois, was fatally shot on August 14, 2017, in the parking lot of a Walgreens located at the northwest corner of Roselle Road and Wise Road in Schaumburg, Illinois. The incident occurred around 5:19 p.m. Tillison was shot in the chest and managed to run into traffic before collapsing. He was transported to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge, where he was pronounced dead at 2:41 a.m. on August 15, 2017. The Cook County medical examiner's office confirmed his death.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was not random, and the victim and the shooter knew each other. Witnesses reported seeing two suspects fleeing the scene in a white GMC SUV. The suspects were described as a 35-year-old African American male with short hair, wearing a blue T-shirt and armed with a handgun, and an African American female with long black hair with red tips.
Oliver L. Rhone, a 37-year-old African American male, was later identified as the primary suspect in the shooting. Rhone and Tillison had a long-standing feud, which culminated in the fatal altercation outside the Walgreens. According to reports, Rhone was sitting in his car in the parking lot when Tillison walked past. The two exchanged words, and Rhone allegedly shot Tillison as he turned to walk away. Tillison managed to walk across the parking lot and jump over a row of bushes before collapsing. Witnesses heard Tillison say, "It was Oliver. Oliver did this," before he succumbed to his injuries.
Rhone fled the scene but later turned himself in to authorities with his attorney. He was charged with first-degree murder. Rhone's defense attorney claimed that Rhone acted in self-defense, citing previous threats and an alleged stabbing incident involving Tillison. However, no weapon was found on Tillison at the time of the shooting, and prosecutors argued that the evidence, including witness testimony and surveillance video, supported the charge of first-degree murder.
The case against Rhone proceeded with the Cook County State's Attorney's Office, and he was scheduled to appear in bond court. The investigation continued as authorities gathered more evidence and testimonies related to the incident.
