Shaun Bradbury, a 36-year-old white male from Cedarville, Illinois, tragically lost his life on February 3, 2019, in a shooting incident outside the Cedar Inn bar. Bradbury, along with his friend Kyle Tucker, 35, was leaving the bar just after 1:45 a.m. when they were shot by Devin Marcum, a 23-year-old man from Freeport. The altercation that led to the shooting was reportedly fueled by a series of Facebook comments and threats, which had escalated tensions between Marcum and the victims.
Marcum, who had been drinking and using cocaine that night, claimed he acted in self-defense during the confrontation.
The incident resulted in the deaths of both Bradbury and Tucker, with Bradbury suffering a fatal gunshot wound to the abdomen. Another individual, Michael Steinhauser, was also injured in the shooting, sustaining a gunshot wound to the neck but surviving the attack. Marcum was quickly apprehended by the police, who found him in possession of a handgun matching the caliber used in the shooting.
During the trial, Marcum's defense argued that he was protecting himself and his family, asserting that he was not the aggressor in the situation. However, witnesses testified that Marcum had drawn his gun during an altercation and opened fire when Tucker attempted to intervene. The jury found Marcum guilty of multiple charges, including first-degree murder, attempted murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, and possession of a weapon by a felon.
Marcum was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The sentencing brought some measure of closure to the families of the victims, though the loss of Bradbury and Tucker left a lasting impact on their loved ones and the community. Bradbury, remembered for his memorable touchdown catch during his high school football days, was mourned by many who knew him as a dedicated family man and a hardworking individual.
