On October 6, 2019, Russell DeAngelo Jefferson, a 31-year-old African American male from Rockford, Illinois, was fatally shot during a birthday celebration at Cronie's Bar & Grill in Machesney Park. Born on October 17, 1988, to Reatha Patterson and Robert Jefferson, Russell was a father to five sons: Quinton, Royal, Ashton, Ramier, and Russell Jefferson Jr. He attended Rockford Public High Schools and was affectionately known as "Russ D" by family and friends.
Following the incident, 28-year-old Kenneth Johnson was arrested and charged with eight counts of first-degree murder, aggravated battery with a firearm, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, and possession of a firearm without a Firearm Owner's Identification card. Authorities reported that another male victim sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound during the shooting and was treated and released from the hospital.
In October 2020, a Winnebago County jury found Kenneth Johnson, then 29, guilty of first-degree murder in the death of Russell Jefferson. He faced a potential sentence of up to 60 years in prison. The trial revealed that Johnson had opened fire inside Cronie's Bar & Grill, resulting in the fatal injury to Jefferson and wounding another individual.
The tragic event led to increased scrutiny of Cronie's Bar & Grill. Village leaders in Machesney Park called for an investigation into the establishment, citing concerns over safety and previous reports of issues such as loud noise and inadequate security. Despite discussions about the bar's future, the owner, Tim Bent Sr., decided to close the establishment permanently less than two weeks after the incident.
