On August 24, 2020, Shafath Khan, a 46-year-old man, was found dead in a condominium complex in Glendale Heights, Illinois. The tragic incident also claimed the life of his four-year-old son, Salman Khan. Both victims were discovered after a fire broke out in their second-floor unit at the Waters Edge condominium complex. Preliminary autopsy results revealed that Shafath Khan and his son died from gunshot wounds to the head.
Despite the autopsy findings and a "boom" heard by witnesses before the fire, the police have not disclosed the circumstances leading up to the fire.
The investigation into the deaths of Shafath Khan and his son is ongoing. The DuPage County Coroner, Richard Jorgensen, has not yet determined whether the deaths are considered homicides or suicides. Glendale Heights police reported that three people were on the second floor when the explosion occurred. Officers rescued a six-year-old child with minor injuries from the unit but were unable to re-enter due to the heat and smoke. The officers then assisted with evacuating the remaining residents in the building.
Deputy Chief Brandon Oliver stated that there is no threat to the community, and no one is currently in custody in connection with the incident. The cause of the fire remains unknown, and the investigation continues. The tragic deaths of Shafath Khan and his son have left the community in shock, and authorities are working diligently to uncover the truth behind the incident.
