Johanna P. Cowart-Williams, a 42-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on August 3, 2021, in Urbana, Illinois. She was found with multiple gunshot wounds in her home on West Church Street. The Urbana Police Department responded to a report of shots fired around 1:30 a.m. Upon arrival, officers discovered Johanna unconscious and immediately attempted CPR, but she never regained consciousness and was pronounced dead at Carle Foundation Hospital. An autopsy confirmed that she died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation revealed that three men approached Johanna's home on foot and fired numerous shots through the windows and walls on the west side of the house. Over 60 bullet holes were found at the scene, indicating the severity of the attack. In addition to Johanna, three other individuals were injured in the shooting. A 21-year-old woman sustained serious injuries and reported having no sensation in her lower extremities, while the other two victims suffered less severe injuries.
Authorities believe that this incident is connected to a series of shootings and murders in the Champaign-Urbana area. The Urbana Police Department, along with Illinois State Police Crime Scene Investigators, are actively investigating the case. They are coordinating with other local law enforcement agencies to determine any links between this shooting and other recent violent incidents in the region.
