Sergeant Marlene Rittmanic, a 49-year-old white female, tragically lost her life on December 29, 2021, in Bourbonnais, Illinois. She was a dedicated member of the Bradley Police Department, having served in law enforcement for 21 years. On the night of her death, Sergeant Rittmanic and her partner, Officer Tyler Bailey, responded to a call at a Comfort Inn hotel regarding dogs barking in an unattended vehicle.
Upon locating the vehicle's owners in a hotel room, the officers attempted to address the situation, which quickly escalated into a violent confrontation.
Darius Sullivan, a 25-year-old male, and Xandria Harris, a 26-year-old female, were identified as the suspects involved in the incident. Sullivan emerged from the hotel room with a 9 mm handgun and shot Officer Bailey in the head. He then chased Sergeant Rittmanic down the hallway, where he managed to disarm her after his own gun jammed. Despite Sergeant Rittmanic's desperate pleas for her life, Sullivan shot her with her own gun, inflicting fatal injuries. Harris was accused of assisting Sullivan during the attack and subsequently fleeing the scene with her two children.
The aftermath of this tragic event led to significant legal proceedings. Darius Sullivan was arrested in North Manchester, Indiana, and later convicted on all charges related to the murder of Sergeant Rittmanic and the attempted murder of Officer Bailey. In January 2025, Sullivan was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. Xandria Harris, who also faced charges of first-degree murder and first-degree attempted murder, has yet to stand trial.
