Ajah Barnes, a 26-year-old African American woman, tragically lost her life on June 5, 2022, in Wheeling, Illinois. Barnes, an active-duty U.S. Navy member assigned to the Naval Station Great Lakes, was found deceased alongside Chief Hospital Corpsman Travis Stephens, 37, in what authorities have determined to be a murder-suicide. The incident occurred near the intersection of Lakeview Drive and Buffalo Grove Road, where both individuals were discovered with gunshot wounds, and a handgun was
found nearby.
The investigation revealed that Barnes and Stephens were in a relationship and had an argument that escalated into a physical altercation, damaging each other's vehicles. Witnesses reported hearing the argument, which eventually led Barnes to leave on foot. Stephens then returned to his apartment, retrieved a handgun, and went looking for Barnes. He ultimately found her and fatally shot her before turning the gun on himself. Both individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.
The Wheeling Police Department, along with the Northern Illinois Crime Laboratory, conducted a thorough investigation, collecting and analyzing evidence from the scene. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office was involved in the case, confirming the cause of death for both individuals. U.S. Naval authorities assisted in notifying the families of the deceased.
