In the quiet, rural town of Senoia, Georgia, the tranquility was shattered on March 5, 1995, by an act of violence that would leave the community in shock. Inside their trailer home, nestled amongst poplar trees, 35-year-old Lillian Ann Lewis and her 38-year-old husband, James Donald Lewis, were killed. The couple, both Caucasian, had their lives cut short in a hail of gunfire, a brutal end to what seemed an ordinary evening.
The initial horror of the discovery was soon compounded by the
almost unbelievable identity of the perpetrator: their own 15-year-old son, Jason Edward Lewis. Driven by a seemingly mundane teenage grievance—anger over a midnight curfew set by his father—Jason had taken his father's 12-gauge shotgun and opened fire on his parents as they watched television. His mother was struck first, her screams followed by the shots that killed his father. He then shot his mother again in the face. After the horrific act, Jason calmly returned to a phone conversation with a friend and chillingly announced, 'I did it. It's done.'
The investigation revealed a disturbing layer to the patricide and matricide. Jason and several of his friends had become enthralled with the film 'Natural Born Killers,' which had been released the previous year. They were reportedly planning a cross-country killing spree, with the murder of their own parents being the horrific first step. Letters exchanged between the youths detailed their elaborate and deadly plot to emulate the violent actions depicted in the movie. This connection to the controversial film drew significant media attention to the case, highlighting the potential influence of violent media on young minds.
Following the murders, Jason drove the family car to a friend's house, where he was subsequently arrested. Authorities recovered the shotgun from the vehicle. During questioning, investigators noted Jason's lack of remorse or any display of emotion for the murder of his parents. He was charged with malice murder for the deaths of Lillian and James. Three other teenagers were also arrested in connection with the wider plot. Jason Edward Lewis was convicted of the murders and is currently serving a life sentence in a Georgia state prison.
