In the quiet town of Santa Claus, Georgia, a horrific tragedy unfolded on December 4, 1997, forever shattering the community's sense of peace. In the early morning hours, 20-year-old Jerry Scott Heidler broke into the home of the Daniels family. Inside, 16-year-old Jessica Noel Daniels, her parents, and her younger brother lay sleeping, unaware of the violence that was about to befall them.
Heidler, armed with a shotgun he took from the family's gun cabinet, methodically moved through
the house. He first shot and killed Jessica's parents, 43-year-old Danny Lewis Daniels and 33-year-old Kimberly Denise 'Kim' Lampp Daniels, as they slept in their bed. He then proceeded to the bedroom of 8-year-old Bryant Edward Daniels, fatally shooting him as well. Jessica, awakened by the commotion, ran towards her parents' room where she was tragically met by Heidler and shot in the back of the head.
The brutality of the act extended beyond the four murders. After killing the family members, Heidler kidnapped three other girls from the home. He later abandoned them on a roadside in a neighboring county, but not before sexually assaulting one of them. The discovery of the unharmed but terrified girls led authorities to the Daniels' residence, where they uncovered the gruesome scene.
The investigation quickly pointed to Jerry Scott Heidler, who was known to the Daniels family. He was arrested within hours of the discovery of the bodies at a relative's house. Heidler eventually confessed to the crimes. In September 1999, a jury found him guilty on all 11 counts against him, including four counts of malice murder. The jury rejected a plea of 'guilty but mentally ill' and subsequently sentenced Jerry Scott Heidler to death for each of the four murders. As of 2025, he remains on death row at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison.
