In the small community of Lyons, Georgia, a life was tragically cut short on Sunday, October 23, 2016. Calem Copeland, a 24-year-old male, died from a gunshot wound in what investigators would later describe as a heartbreaking accident. A lifelong resident of Toombs County and a graduate of Toombs County High School, Copeland was a U.S. Army veteran who had served a tour in Afghanistan. After his military service, he worked as a security officer at the Edwin I.

The fatal incident unfolded at a residence on Johnson Corner Road. According to the Toombs County Sheriff's Office, Copeland was at the home of his 29-year-old cousin, Brandon Phillips. In what was intended as a prank, Copeland jumped out to scare Phillips in a dimly lit hallway of the home. Phillips, believing an intruder was in his house, had armed himself with a pistol for protection. The split-second reaction to being startled led to the fatal shooting.
Emergency services were called to the scene where another individual, Fallon Williamson, was found rendering aid to Copeland. Deputies joined in providing medical assistance until paramedics arrived. Copeland was transported to Meadows Regional Medical Center in Vidalia, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. The Toombs County Sheriff's Office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation launched a joint investigation into the shooting. Based on the preliminary findings, investigators believed the shooting was accidental, and no arrests were anticipated. The authorities described the event as a tragic situation for the entire family.
