Paul Allen Wilson, a 44-year-old white male, was a beloved husband who lived in Auburn, Georgia. On the night of July 2, 2017, his life was tragically cut short in an act of violence that stemmed from a neighborhood dispute. After returning home from his job as a cook, he took his dogs for their nightly walk, a routine that would end in his death.
For several months leading up to that fatal night, Wilson and his wife, Beth, had been enduring harassment from their neighbor, Larry Russell
Bates. Bates, who lived across the street, had repeatedly accused the Wilsons of letting their dogs defecate in his yard, an accusation they denied. Despite attempts to resolve the issue peacefully, the situation escalated. Two weeks prior to the shooting, the two men had seemingly agreed to move past their differences.
However, on that Sunday morning just after 1 a.m., Bates confronted Wilson during his walk. In a sudden and violent turn of events, Bates shot Wilson multiple times. One of the Wilsons' dogs was also killed in the attack. Beth Wilson heard the gunshots and rushed outside to find her husband on the sidewalk, where he took his last breath in her arms.
Authorities were called to the scene, and Larry Russell Bates was arrested. He was subsequently taken to the Barrow County Detention Center and charged with murder and animal cruelty. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was brought in to assist with the ongoing investigation into the senseless killing.
