In the quiet town of Palmetto, Georgia, a family tragedy unfolded on an April evening, forever altering the lives of those involved. On April 30, 2019, Edmond Irvin, a 25-year-old male and a respected Coweta County Sheriff's Deputy, was fatally shot inside a residence on Snowfall Terrace. The off-duty deputy was not on call but was dealing with a personal matter that ultimately cost him his life. He was months away from becoming a father.
The circumstances leading to the fatal encounter began with a family dispute. Irvin had engaged in a physical altercation with his 17-year-old cousin, Danny Long. The disagreement stemmed from Irvin confronting the teenager about his recent behavior, which included staying out late and being disrespectful towards his own mother, who was also Irvin's cousin. Following the initial confrontation, Irvin, who was unarmed, attempted to reconcile with his younger cousin. He approached Long's room, bringing him a jacket that had been left outside. However, Long was still angered by their earlier fight.
Instead of a resolution, the situation escalated dramatically. Long yelled and cursed at Irvin, leading to a second physical fight. It was then that Long, who had retrieved a handgun from his dresser after the first altercation, fired three shots. Family members in the home heard Long shout an expletive-laden declaration just before the gunshots rang out. Irvin died at the scene. In the chaotic moments after the shooting, Long fled the house, but not before threatening to kill Irvin's pregnant fiancée, who had screamed at him as he ran. A neighbor later reported hearing Long yell threats about killing everyone in the house as he fled.
A massive manhunt was launched by Palmetto police, and officers with assault weapons established a roadblock to search for the shooter. The search concluded about three miles from the scene, where Danny Long was located and surrendered to the authorities. He was subsequently arrested and charged with murder and terroristic threats. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation took the lead on the case, which eventually went to the Coweta County District Attorney's Office for prosecution. In July 2021, a jury found Danny Long guilty of malice murder and felony murder. For the killing of his cousin, the man who had tried to set him on a better path, Long was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole, with an additional 25 years to serve.
