In the small town of Tennille, Georgia, the life of 25-year-old Montico Maze was cut short on the evening of Saturday, April 3, 2021. The young man, who was a graduate of Washington County High School and had attended both Oconee Fall Line Technical College and Savannah State University, was known as an entrepreneur and an avid sports fan who cherished time with his family and friends.

That spring evening, however, turned tragic when Maze was shot in the 600 block of Hagan Circle. He was rushed to the Washington County Regional Medical Center but was pronounced dead. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was called in to assist the Washington County Sheriff's Office with the homicide investigation. In the immediate aftermath, a person was detained by law enforcement for questioning.

As the investigation unfolded, it came to light that the person detained was Maze's girlfriend. Witnesses at the scene had reportedly identified her as the individual who shot him. She was questioned by the sheriff's office but was later released. In the weeks that followed, Maze's mother, Felicia Henderson, voiced her pain and frustration, stating that her son's case seemed to be at a standstill. She acknowledged that her son and his girlfriend had a tumultuous relationship, with both having been previously arrested for domestic violence.

Nearly six weeks after the shooting, the Washington County Sheriff, Joel Cochran, indicated that they were awaiting further findings from the GBI before turning the case over to the district attorney's office. It would then be up to the district attorney to decide whether to press charges. The GBI confirmed that the autopsy had been completed but did not release any further details, citing the active and ongoing nature of the investigation. There have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests, charges, or convictions in connection with the death of Montico Maze.
