Feras Morad, a 20-year-old college student, was killed on May 27, 2015, in Long Beach, California. Morad, who had been an accomplished debater and intended to study political science, fell from a second-story window and appeared disoriented when officers arrived. Officer Matthew Hernandez responded and, after a struggle, shot Morad, stating that he feared for his life as Morad approached with clenched fists. Witnesses, including firefighters, testified that Morad did not appear aggressive.
The officer was later cleared of any wrongdoing, but the incident sparked protests and a lawsuit from Morad's family seeking justice.
