In the quiet, rural setting of Buena Vista, Georgia, a tragedy unfolded in the early morning hours of July 18, 2022, shattering the peace of the small community. On that day, 65-year-old Paula Brown Kelly was found shot to death in her home on Ira Kelly Road. She was not the only victim of the violent outburst that occurred. Also found deceased at the scene were her 69-year-old brother, Charles Brown, and her 23-year-old granddaughter, Lara Bullard, who was pregnant at the time. All three lived at the residence where their lives were abruptly ended.
Responding to a 911 call from a concerned citizen who reported a shooting, Schley County sheriff's deputies arrived at the home to a grim discovery. Inside, they found the bodies of Kelly, Brown, and Bullard. Also present at the scene was Jamie Leon Harris, 37, who was identified as Paula Kelly's boyfriend. Harris, who also resided at the home, was taken into custody by the deputies who first arrived. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was subsequently called in to lead the homicide investigation.
Following his arrest at the scene, Jamie Leon Harris was charged in connection with the deaths. The charges brought against him were extensive, including three counts of felony murder, three counts of aggravated assault, and one count of feticide, the latter charge stemming from the death of Lara Bullard's unborn child. Harris was taken into custody and jailed in the neighboring Sumter County. A judge later ordered that he be held without bail due to the severity of the charges. The incident left the local community in a state of shock and grief over the sudden and violent loss of three of its members.
