Theron Anthony Burnham, a 27-year-old deputy sheriff from Polk County, Florida, tragically lost his life on January 9, 1981. Deputy Burnham was dispatched to investigate a suspicious person walking along Drane Field Road, near the Lakeland Municipal Airport, at around 4:00 a.m. Unbeknownst to him, the suspect had already committed two murders earlier that evening and was under the influence of narcotics.
As Deputy Burnham attempted to detain the suspect, he was overpowered and fatally shot with his own weapon. His body was later discovered in a ditch along Drane Field Road.
The suspect, who had also killed two other individuals that night, engaged in a gunfight with other responding deputies but managed to evade capture initially. A massive manhunt ensued, and the suspect was apprehended the following day. The suspect, identified as Paul Beasley Johnson, was subsequently tried and sentenced to death after three trials. Johnson remained on death row for over four decades before dying of natural causes in prison in 2023.
