On April 13, 1996, Timwanika Lumpkins, a 22-year-old African American woman, was found brutally murdered in an apartment in Dade City, Florida. The incident also involved Marlin Barnes, a linebacker for the University of Miami Hurricanes, who was discovered gravely injured at the scene. Barnes was found by his roommate, Earl Little, who immediately called 911. When first responders arrived, they found Lumpkins in a bedroom, severely beaten and on the verge of death.
