Nicholas G. Sottile, a 48-year-old white male, was a sergeant with the Florida Highway Patrol. On January 12, 2007, he was tragically killed during a routine traffic stop on U.S. 27 north of Lake Placid, Florida. During the stop, one of the vehicle's occupants produced a handgun and shot Sergeant Sottile in the chest. Despite being mortally wounded, he managed to notify dispatchers that he had been shot.
