Cagney Aaron Benson, a 29-year-old resident of Springfield, Florida, was found dead on December 18, 2014. His body was discovered in the driver's seat of a 2009 Chevy Cobalt at around 6:30 a.m. in the Maharaj Mobile Home Park. Benson had been shot once in the face and once behind the ear, indicating a targeted attack. The car was parked and not running at the time of the discovery, suggesting that the shooting occurred while the vehicle was stationary.
The investigation into Benson's
death revealed that he had been involved in a robbery the night before he was found dead. Benson, along with two other men, had allegedly robbed Fredricus White, taking his jewelry, cellphone, money, and drugs. During the robbery, Benson reportedly put a gun to White's head and threatened to kill him, but one of the other assailants intervened. This incident is believed to have provided the motive for Benson's murder.
Fredricus White became the prime suspect in the case, with investigators theorizing that he had conspired with his uncle, Omar Fidel Redmon, and others to have Benson killed in retaliation for the robbery. However, the investigation faced significant challenges, including a lack of cooperation from key witnesses. Despite the efforts of the Bay County Sheriff's Office, which committed 15 investigators to the case, the community's reluctance to provide information hindered progress.
In August 2015, prosecutors dropped charges against White due to insufficient evidence and the refusal of a key witness to cooperate. This decision was met with frustration from both the investigators and Benson's family, who continued to seek justice for his murder. The case remains open, with the Bay County Sheriff's Office actively investigating in hopes of finding new leads.
