Sheley Glenn Brooks, a 75-year-old white male, was tragically murdered on April 18, 2015, in his home in Ponce de Leon, Florida. The incident also claimed the life of his wife, Jacqulyn Brooks. The couple were well-known in their community for their ministry work and their generous spirit.
The investigation revealed that Joshua Brandyn Gaskey, a 28-year-old white male from Pensacola, Florida, was responsible for the murders.
Gaskey had visited the Brookses' home seeking money and prescription drugs. When his requests were denied, he returned the following day and shot both Sheley and Jacqulyn Brooks in the head twice with a .22-caliber revolver. The motive behind the crime was to obtain Mrs. Brooks' prescription medication.
Gaskey was arrested and charged with two counts of first-degree murder, armed burglary, and armed robbery. During the trial, the prosecution presented evidence that Gaskey had planned the robbery and murders to ensure the couple could not identify him. The defense argued that Gaskey's troubled childhood should be considered in his sentencing. Despite facing the death penalty, the jury ultimately sentenced Gaskey to two consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.
The case was thoroughly investigated by the Holmes County Sheriff's Department, with assistance from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and other local law enforcement agencies.
