Darryl Roman Burt II, a 29-year-old African American male, tragically lost his life on June 12, 2016, during the horrific mass shooting at the Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida. Burt, who was from Jacksonville, Florida, was among the 49 victims killed in what became one of the deadliest mass shootings in U.S. history. The attack was carried out by Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old security guard, who opened fire inside the nightclub, targeting the LGBTQ+ community.
Mateen was later killed by police after a three-hour standoff.
Burt was a dedicated financial aid officer at Keiser University in Jacksonville and was known for his active involvement in community service. He was a member of the Jacksonville Jaycees, a non-profit organization focused on community improvement projects. Burt had recently graduated with a master’s degree in human resources management from DeVry University and was celebrating his accomplishment with friends at Pulse on the night of the attack.
The investigation into the Pulse nightclub shooting revealed that Mateen had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State during the attack. The FBI had previously investigated Mateen in 2013 and 2014 for potential ties to terrorism but had closed the cases due to lack of evidence. Following the shooting, Mateen’s wife, Noor Salman, was arrested and charged with aiding and abetting her husband and obstruction of justice. However, in March 2018, Salman was acquitted of all charges after a federal jury found insufficient evidence to prove her involvement in the attack.
