The night took a grim turn when a blue Charger reportedly pulled
into the parking lot of the Good Friends Restaurant in west Birmingham. An occupant of the vehicle, described as a Black male, opened fire on Watford and the two others who were with him. In the immediate aftermath, a private vehicle rushed the three victims to Princeton Hospital. Despite the urgent medical attention, Justin Watford was pronounced dead from his injuries. The two other victims, one with a gunshot wound to the arm and the other with a grazed neck, survived the harrowing ordeal.
In the wake of the shooting, the blue Charger was seen fleeing the area, disappearing into the night. The Birmingham Police Department launched a homicide investigation into Watford's death, but the case proved to be a difficult one to solve. With the shooter having vanished from the scene, and limited leads to go on, the investigation eventually stalled, and the case was designated as a cold case.
