Juan Javier Cruz, a 22-year-old man from Lake Worth, Florida, was fatally shot on August 6, 2017. The incident occurred after Cruz defended his group of friends against homophobic slurs. According to reports, Cruz and his friends were leaving a restaurant when they encountered the suspect, who began shouting anti-gay comments at them. Cruz stood up to the attacker, which led to the shooting.
