Serafin "Danny" Lorenzo, a 53-year-old Hispanic male, and his wife Deana K. Lorenzo, a 51-year-old female, were tragically murdered on April 9, 2018, in Estero, Florida. The couple, residents of Brooksville, Florida, were found dead in the parking lot of the Galleria complex. Serafin Lorenzo was discovered with multiple gunshot wounds in a red truck, while Deana Lorenzo was found nearby, also with multiple gunshot wounds. The Lorenzos had traveled to Estero to purchase firearms from a seller they found on a website called Armslist. They had withdrawn $3,000 in cash for the transaction, which ultimately led to their deaths.
The investigation into their murders revealed that two former U.S. Army soldiers, Alex Jared Zwiefelhofer, 22, and Craig Austin Lang, 29, were responsible for the crime. The two men were charged with multiple offenses, including conspiracy to commit interference with commerce by violence, interference with commerce by violence, conspiracy to use and carry a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence, and use and discharge of a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. The motive behind the robbery and murder was to obtain money to fund their travel to Venezuela, where they intended to participate in armed conflict in nearby Bolivia.
Zwiefelhofer and Lang were apprehended and faced legal proceedings for their actions. Zwiefelhofer, who had previously gone AWOL from the U.S. Army and fought in Ukraine, was sentenced to consecutive life sentences for his role in the double homicide and armed robbery. Lang, who was living in Ukraine at the time of his arrest, was extradited to the United States to face trial. The case involved extensive collaboration between local and federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Lee County Sheriff's Office.
