Devante Carthers, a 25-year-old resident of Eustis, Florida, tragically lost his life on May 28, 2018. The incident occurred during the early hours of the morning when Carthers was involved in a heated argument with Andrew Williams, 24, while they were traveling in a vehicle with another individual. According to reports, the argument escalated, leading Williams to pull out a semi-automatic handgun and fatally shoot Carthers.
The victim's body was subsequently dumped along Jenny Lane in an unincorporated area of Eustis.
The Eustis Police Department, along with the Lake County Sheriff's Office, quickly launched a homicide investigation. A witness, who was present during the incident, provided crucial information that led to the identification and arrest of Andrew Williams. Williams was apprehended later that day after being found with a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to his calf. He was taken into custody by the Sanford Police at Central Florida Regional Hospital and charged with first-degree murder.
The case proceeded to trial, where Williams took the stand in his defense, claiming he acted in self-defense. However, the prosecution presented compelling evidence, including eyewitness testimony from Williams' girlfriend, who was also in the vehicle at the time of the shooting. She testified that Williams had threatened her life if she revealed what had happened and forced her to help dispose of Carthers' body and clean the vehicle. Despite Williams' claims, the jury found him guilty of first-degree murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The trial also revealed that less than a month before Carthers' death, another individual, Joshua Brown, was found dead in Eustis. The investigation into Brown's death had also pointed to Williams, suggesting a pattern of violent behavior. However, the motive behind Carthers' murder remained unclear, with prosecutors unable to present a definitive reason during the trial.
