On August 16, 2015, 22-year-old Reed Franklin Jr. was shot and killed in Suitland, Maryland, in what appeared not to be a random act. The incident occurred in the Village at Towne Square area, where Franklin was struck by numerous gunshots, with witnesses describing rapid, continuous bursts of gunfire. Franklin was found at the scene, and though police responded quickly, no arrests were made immediately.
