In the early evening of October 2, 2015, the bustling Hilltop Shopping Center in the 5400 block of Reisterstown Road in Baltimore, Maryland, became the scene of a tragedy. Amidst the daily errands of shoppers and the general hum of the busy area, gunfire erupted, shattering the peace and leaving chaos in its wake. When the shooting ceased, five people were struck, among them 71-year-old James Gaylord.
The violence of that day claimed his life and left a community in shock.
Four other individuals, a 41-year-old woman and three men aged 54, 33, and 26, were also wounded in the attack but survived with non-life-threatening injuries. They were caught in the crossfire of a violent act that seemed to erupt without warning. In the immediate aftermath, witnesses reported seeing two individuals fleeing the scene, quickly becoming persons of interest in the investigation that followed. However, the chaotic environment of the shopping center at the time of the incident made it difficult for law enforcement to obtain clear identifications of the suspects.
The Baltimore Police Department's homicide detectives launched an investigation into the fatal shooting of James Gaylord, but the case has proven to be a difficult one to solve. Despite the presence of multiple witnesses, the key information needed to lead to an arrest has remained elusive. In an effort to bring justice for Gaylord and his family, Metro Crime Stoppers has offered a reward of up to $2,000 for any information that leads to the identification and indictment of the individuals responsible for this senseless act of violence. To this day, the homicide of James Gaylord remains unsolved, a painful open wound for his family and the Baltimore community. The search for the two suspects continues, with authorities urging anyone with information to come forward.
