On the evening of November 23, 2019, at approximately 9:39 p.m., Daytona Beach police responded to reports of gunshots near Campbell Middle School, located at 625 South Keech Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a vehicle that had crashed into the east side of the school building. Inside, they found 18-year-old Eric Gordon slumped over the steering wheel, bleeding from a gunshot wound to the left side of his head. He was immediately transported to Halifax Hospital, where he was pronounced dead early the following morning. Investigators quickly began piecing together the events leading up to the shooting. Security footage from the area captured a suspect vehicle fleeing the scene shortly after the incident. Further investigation revealed that this same vehicle had been involved in another shooting the day after Gordon's murder. The vehicle was traced back to its owner, who reported that their 16-year-old daughter, Selvina Bernard, had taken the car without permission. Upon being interviewed by detectives, Bernard admitted to orchestrating a plan to rob and carjack Eric Gordon. She confessed to luring Gordon to a specific location and entering his vehicle under the pretense of engaging in intimate activities to distract him. During this time, her accomplices approached the car to execute the robbery. Bernard was in the vehicle when Gordon was shot and subsequently fled the scene with her accomplices. Further investigation identified 17-year-old Shyheem Rainge Jr. as the individual who fired the fatal shot. In December 2019, Rainge was apprehended in Georgia by U.S. Marshals, while Bernard was already in custody at a juvenile detention center in Daytona Beach on unrelated charges. Both were charged with first-degree murder. ((https://www.fox35orlando.com/news/teens-16-and-17-arrested-in-murder-of-daytona-beach-man?utm_source=chatgpt.com))

Legal proceedings followed, and in 2022, Bernard pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. She is scheduled for sentencing in October. Rainge, now 21, stood trial and was found guilty of second-degree murder and possession of a firearm as a delinquent in September 2023. He faces a potential life sentence. State Attorney R.J. Larizza commented on the case, stating, "An 18-year-old is dead and the shooter, now 21, will likely spend the rest of his life in prison. This is the reality and consequence of Young Guns violence."
