On March 12, 2021, in Christmas, Florida, a longstanding property dispute between neighbors culminated in the tragic death of 30-year-old Billy Nobles. The conflict arose over the use and boundaries of a shared 40-acre family property, inherited by Juanita Christie and her three sisters in 2016. Billy Nobles, the grandson of one of Juanita's sisters' husbands, resided on the property with his wife, adjacent to Juanita and her husband, Ralph Christie Jr.
Tensions had been escalating due to disagreements over property lines and land usage.
On the day of the incident, Nobles was operating a backhoe tractor near the Christies' residence, reportedly working on constructing a new driveway to enhance privacy. Juanita Christie confronted Nobles, accusing him of removing trees without permission. She claimed that during this confrontation, she became entangled in vines and was subsequently run over by the tractor, prompting her to fear for her life. In response, Ralph Christie Jr., 69, allegedly retrieved a rifle and shot Nobles once, resulting in his death.
However, evidence later contradicted Juanita Christie's account. A 23-minute video found on Nobles' cellphone captured the entire incident. The footage revealed that Juanita was leaning against the tractor, blocking its path, despite multiple requests from Nobles to move. She was not pinned or injured by the tractor, as she had claimed. The video showed Ralph Christie aiming his rifle at Nobles from approximately 15 feet away and firing a single shot after Juanita stepped aside. Nobles can be heard expressing his pain and concern for his children in his final moments.
Following the investigation, Ralph Christie Jr. was arrested and charged with first-degree murder with a firearm. His attorney argued that Christie acted in self-defense, believing his wife was in imminent danger. Juanita Christie was also arrested for providing false information to law enforcement regarding the circumstances of the shooting.
In August 2022, Ralph Christie Jr. accepted a plea deal, reducing the charge to manslaughter. He was subsequently sentenced to a decade in prison. During the sentencing, emotions ran high as Nobles' widow pleaded for the maximum sentence, expressing the profound loss experienced by their family.
