Stephon Gaines, a young African American male, was reported missing on November 2, 2021, from Jackson County, Florida. He was last seen on October 19, 2021, along with Nicholas Hollis, another victim in this tragic case. On October 11, 2023, investigators discovered skeletal remains in a wooded area of Jacob City, which were later identified as those of Stephon Gaines and Nicholas Hollis. This discovery marked a significant breakthrough in the case, leading to the identification and arrest of two primary suspects. Jeremiah Castro, 22, and Willtaye Young, 20, were charged with two counts of murder each. Castro was apprehended by the United States Marshal Service near Atlanta, Georgia, and extradited to Jackson County to face charges. Young, already incarcerated in Gadsden County Jail on unrelated charges, was also charged with the murders.
Further investigation revealed that Castro and Young were allegedly hired by Jerry Lee Upshaw, Jr., a 46-year-old man with a lengthy criminal record, including charges of human trafficking and arson. Upshaw was indicted on two counts of first-degree murder and one count of solicitation to commit first-degree murder. Prosecutors believe that Upshaw orchestrated the killings of Gaines and Hollis, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
